Keywords: Drinking water hygiene

To multiply, Legionella and Pseudomonas need tranquility, nutrients and warmth. The aim of efficient prophylaxis is to deprive them of this "basis for growth" as far as possible. In terms of healthy drinking water, as water is essential for life.

1. Tranquility

Studies based on practical experiments confirm that stagnation within pipework systems is a major problem. Stagnation encourages the growth of Legionella and Pseudomonas and is also responsible for the multiplication of other bacteria. From the planning stage to practical application and usage, domestic water systems need to be sufficiently reliable to minimise the problem of stagnation. Studies have shown that regular rinsing is an important prophylactic measure to prevent the multiplication of foreign bodies in water.

2. Nutrients

Water is a precious commodity. Legionella and Pseudomonas can compromise the high quality level of water. Legionella and Pseudomonas need nutrients to proliferate further. They must be deprived of this nutrient basis, for example resulting from formation of a biofilm, as far as possible. This focuses attention on raw materials, installation components and final products as well as the procedures used for their testing. Products tested according to W270 are considered to be recommendable.
It must be ruled out that final products are already contaminated on delivery. Reliable test procedures for products are a key prerequisite for efficient legionella and Pseudomonas prevention.

3. Warmth

Legionella requires warmth. Warmth generally encourages bacterial growth. Investigations have at the same time disproved that Legionella and Pseudomonas only occur in hot water pipes. Studies have demonstrated the problem of Legionella in cold water pipes as well.
